Lewis Winfield Coachman was born on May 8, 1899 in Shannon, NC the only child to James Coachman and Esther Jane McMillian. Lewis spent his early years in Lumber Bridge Township in NC where he was a carpenter by trade. Still today many of the buildings and homes that he constructed are still standing in the Fayetteville, NC area. 

Bertha Bell Carlyle was born July 15, 1901 in St. Pauls, NC, the fifteenth child of Henry Carlyle and Harriett Isabella Foy.  Berta was employed as a cafeteria manager with the Cumberland County Schools.

Lewis at the age of 24 married Bertha who was 22 on November 15, 1923 in Cross Creek, NC.  To this union nine children were born, Warren, William, George, Esther, Doris, Lorine, Corine, Winfield, and Bertha.

Bertha passed away on June 17, 1974 in Fayetteville, NC and her loving husband followed her to glory a year later on September 14, 1975.  They were both buried next to each other at Swans Creek Missionary Baptist Church
